Morse Code Translator

Translate text to dots and dashes — and back.

Text or morse

Morse code

.... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..

Letters are separated by spaces, words by “/”.

How it works

This morse code translator auto-detects direction: type ordinary text and it outputs dots and dashes, or paste morse and it decodes the message back to text. Each letter maps to a fixed sequence of dots and dashes assigned by frequency of use in English — E, the most common letter, is a single dot — with letters separated by spaces and words by a forward slash.

When you'd use this

  • Ham radio and Scouting practice: checking your own hand-decoded morse against an instant answer while learning the alphabet or working toward a badge.
  • Puzzles, escape rooms, and ARGs: decoding a string of dots and dashes found in a puzzle clue without translating the whole alphabet by hand.
  • Novelty jewelry and tattoos: encoding a short name or date into morse to check the exact dot-dash sequence before it becomes permanent.

Frequently asked questions

What is SOS in morse code?

SOS is ... --- ... — three dots, three dashes, three dots, sent as one continuous sequence. It was chosen as the distress signal because it's unmistakable, not as an abbreviation for any phrase.

How are words separated in morse code?

In timing terms, a word gap is seven units of silence. In writing, the convention — used by this translator — is a forward slash between words and single spaces between letters.

Can I decode morse code by pasting it here?

Yes. Paste dots and dashes (with spaces between letters and / between words) and the translator auto-detects it's morse and outputs the text. It also accepts the typographic · and − characters some sources use.

Does morse code cover numbers and punctuation?

Yes — digits 0–9 have standard five-symbol codes, and common punctuation (period, comma, question mark, slash, @) has assigned sequences, all supported here.
