What Does "Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit Amet" Actually Say?
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is probably the most-typed and least-understood sentence on the internet — it's on more web pages, mockups, and print layouts than almost any real sentence in any language, and yet almost nobody who's pasted it knows what, if anything, it actually says.
The short answer: it's scrambled, truncated Latin, not a real sentence, and it was never meant to be read for meaning in the first place.
It's real Latin words, arranged to mean nothing
The standard lorem ipsum passage traces back to a genuine work of Latin literature — Cicero's 'De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' ('On the Ends of Good and Evil'), written in 45 BC. Somewhere around the 1500s, a printer took a chunk of that text, and the passage was altered, scrambled, and had words removed and added over the centuries of reuse that followed, to the point that the modern version is no longer grammatically coherent Latin at all — 'lorem' itself isn't even a real Latin word; it's a fragment left over from 'dolorem' (pain, suffering) after the passage was cut mid-word.
The literal words, loosely
Taken individually, the words in 'lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' roughly correspond to fragments meaning 'pain itself, sorrow, is loved' or similar — but this isn't a translatable sentence, since 'lorem' is a broken word fragment, not a complete one, and the surrounding grammar doesn't hold together as real Latin syntax. Anyone who tells you the exact modern English translation is being more precise than the text actually allows — it's genuinely scrambled, not just archaic.
Why nonsense Latin, specifically
The reason it stuck as the industry-standard placeholder, rather than any other language's filler text, is precisely because it looks like real language (Latin letterforms, plausible word lengths, familiar punctuation rhythm) while being unreadable to the overwhelming majority of viewers. That combination — realistic text shape without any actual meaning pulling the reader's attention away from the layout — is exactly what a designer wants when testing how a page looks with text in it, which is the entire reason it survived 500 years past the point anyone still reads Cicero's original for pleasure.
